Photos of Old Chefoo ( Yantai
)
Chefoo
became an open port after the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858. The name Chefoo comes
from the name of the
nearby
peninsula, called Zhifu. It was home to the American China Mission
and
the American Asiatic Squadron would spend the summer there till World War II
broke out,
when
it was occupied by the Japanese. Some Japanese soldiers refused to surrender
and holed up
in
the West Fort, where you can still see traces of machine gun fire . There is
also an East Fort, built in the Qing dynasty
with
several Krupp guns .Many foreign consulates were located on Yantai Hill, which
is now as museum .Raymond Burr, of
Perry
Mason fame spent some time here as a child, as did Henry Luce of Time Magazine
.Yantai was a German concession for 20 years, till WWI.
Yantai
Beer was brewed here before Qingdao (Tsingtao) Beer.
